burundi Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 I had my front disks and pads changed about 2000 miles ago, they felt spongy and odd at first but I am not sure if they have improved that much. One oddity is that when I pump the brake pedal until it gets hard and then keep my foot gently on the pedal the pressure slowly goes out of the brake system. Is this normal for a MK1 90bhp tdi or could I have a faulty seal somewhere? A friend has suggested this may be normal behaviour on some vehicles but he isn't familiar with the Sharan. TIAB. Quote
trialuser Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 My r reg Alhambra does this - and has done for 9 years - I assumed it was normal - now you have sown the seed of doubt. Quote
seatkid Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 pumping the brake until it goes hard means you used up all the vacuum and lost assistance, then when you keep your foot on the brake after this, the vacuum builds up again and the pedal sinks/ goes soft as assistance returns. Not sure if you should normally be able to "pump until hard" with engine running though, perhaps others can try and post a comment. If not then you have a vacuum leak in the piping(common problem) or servo(not as common but known to happen..) Quote
RIPOFF Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 Hi mate i had a galaxy with the same problem, then i heard a hissing sound from the footwell area took it to a garage and was told to let it develop which i did, about 6 weeks later brakes failed and it turned out to be a seal, spoke to tech support ford and requested a seal to be informed i had to buy a new brake servo at a cost of Quote
burundi Posted July 4, 2007 Author Report Posted July 4, 2007 Thanks for all the replies, next time I am at my mates garage I am going to get it on a ramp and have a look at the hoses and check for any bulges or leaks. Quote
daz131 Posted July 20, 2007 Report Posted July 20, 2007 brake servo, cost me 350 plus labour get your head i the footwell, behind the brake pedal you should have a consatina covering the master cylinder piston the seal is right up against the bulk head i this location look for a black seal if it is damaged the only reslove is a replacement master cylinder as they no longer make seal repair kits due to health and safety directive. not one you want to happen but it does. i have noticed with ford that all the expensive parts are the ones that go over time brake servo Quote
